Navy Officer Dagger [2nd Model] with Hanger, Knot and Hammered Scabbard by F.W. Höller Solingen
This Höller example is very attractive and hammered scabbard features. Kriegsmarine 2nd Model, 1938. The maker mark is stamped by F.W. Höller Solingen. Overall is a great example.
Grip: The Höller pommels are slightly smaller than most of the other types, and have a nice angle to the half-open eagle wings. This nicely offsets the wreath and mobile, which is executed in deep relief. The crossguard has the usual fouled anchors in the center blocks, with a decoration of acanthus leaves on the sides of the quillon arms. The button ends are nicely hand enhanced, with nipples that jut out quite far. The grip is a lighter tangerine color orange. The grip is in perfect condition and, as we usually see on Höller pieces, it is tightly wrapped with springy copper wire. The original-to-the-piece portepee is set in place in a Naval reef tie. This knot is the later nylon type, but die to the usage and age it has tones to a fine golden color. It is easy to see that this knot has always been with this dagger. The stem and slide have a woven look to them, and the lower ball is all of yarn-like material with the cat's anus stuffing.
Blade: The dark and crisp acid etched fouled anchor blade on this one looks great! The fit is nice and tight and the tip comes to a perfect point. The reverse ricasso is etched with the early form of the Höller trademark, being slightly more detailed that later versions. It features a set of double ovals which contain the firm's name and location, “F.W. Höller Solingen”. Inside is the famous thermometer logo, with too many digits to ever count... or 17 on each side. The leather buffer shows some age but is still in place. The brown felt buffer pad continues to remain intact.
Scabbard: The scabbard is straight throughout and has an excellent hammered finish. This finish is nicely set off by the straight-across bands typical of the Höller firm. These bands feature overlapping oak leaves with acorns in between and show only mild wear. The eyelets have the hammered finish. The throat is retained by two flush mounted headless side screws.
