Railway Water Protection Police Dagger [M1938] - Eickhorn Solingen

Rare Reichsbahn Water Protection (RWP) Leader Dagger of the Model 1938, manufactured by the Solingen maker Eickhorn, Solingen. The dagger is offered complete with an associated portepee. Overall length is approximately 40.2 cm. The piece presents in a highly attractive, collector-grade condition.

Grip: Round black synthetic grip with double twisted fluting in a convex outward profile. The round pommel bears a swastika and is screw-mounted to the tang. At the lower end, the typical railway protection grip ring is present. The crossguard is formed as a national eagle facing to the left, with the wing ends swirling downward. In the center, the eagle holds a wreath with swastika in its talons.

Blade: Straight double-edged blade in good condition. The original crossgrain is fully preserved and clearly visible. The reverse bears the maker marking “Original Eickhorn Solingen”. The original leather blade buffer is present between ricasso and crossguard.

Scabbard: Steel scabbard with throat and two bands, each fitted with a movable hanging ring; the rings are fully closed. The scabbard is drawn from a single sheet of steel and features a pebbled surface texture on both sides. The tip is rounded and not pushed in. The throat is separately fitted and retained by a single screw on the reverse. The scabbard is free of dents or deformation.

Historical Classification: Reichsbahn Water Protection (RWP) Leader Dagger Model 1938

The Reichsbahn Water Protection belonged to specialized units associated with the German Reichsbahn and was tasked with security and control duties in port areas, on canals, and along waterborne transport routes. The Model 1938 Leader Dagger served as a representative sidearm for corresponding leadership ranks.

This model is distinguished by its unique grip design with twisted fluting, the characteristic railway protection grip ring, and the scabbard with its pebbled surface texture. The maker marking “Original Eickhorn Solingen” is a key feature for collector attribution.

Due to the limited distribution of the unit and comparatively small procurement numbers, original RWP daggers are today regarded as rare specialized daggers and are accordingly sought after by advanced collectors.
