Government Official's Dagger [M1939] with Hangers by F.W. Höller Solingen
Government Official Dagger Model 1939 complete with portepee and hanger, manufactured by F.W. Höller Solingen. The dagger is preserved in good condition and has an overall length of approximately 39.2 cm. Typical example of a Government Official dagger of the Model 1939 pattern.
Grip: Undamaged grip with wooden core and applied mother-of-pearl grip plates. The pommel is formed as an eagle head and secured to the tang by screw. At the lower end of the grip is a double-grooved grip ring. The crossguard is designed in the form of a Reich eagle holding a wreath with national emblem in its claws.
Blade: Double-edged blade in good condition. The blade tip is intact and unshortened. The reverse side bears the maker mark “F.W. Höller Solingen”. Between the blade shoulders and the lower crossguard remains the original leather buffer washer.
Scabbard: Steel scabbard with granulated surface texture on both front and reverse sides. Fitted with throat piece and two oak leaf decorated suspension bands with two loose, fully closed carrying rings. The throat insert is separately mounted and secured by a screw on the reverse. The tip is rounded and not dented.
Portepee & Hanger: The dagger is offered complete with portepee and matching hanger.
Historical Background: Government Official Dagger Model 1939
The Government Official Dagger Model 1939 was introduced for members of various governmental agencies and administrative services and belongs to the known German organizational edged weapons of the period. Its design follows the representative form of state service daggers with features specific to civil administration officials.
Characteristic elements include the eagle head pommel, the crossguard in the form of a Reich eagle, mother-of-pearl grip plates and scabbard fittings decorated with oak leaf motifs. The dagger was generally worn together with portepee and hanger as part of the official uniform.
