Historical Context: Belgian Bayonet M 1924/49 (Export to Venezuela)
The M 1924/49 bayonet was developed during early export contracts for the new FN Self-Loading Rifle Model 1949. Venezuela was among the first customers and received 8,000 rifles between 1949 and 1951 – representing the very first production series of the FN-49.
At that time FN had not yet created a purpose-built bayonet for the FN-49, so Venezuela adopted a modified version of the existing Mauser M1924. The design was adapted for the self-loading rifle, most notably by adding a significantly larger muzzle ring to accommodate the FN-49’s wider barrel.
The M 1924/49 bayonet was later also adopted by Indonesia (16,000 pieces from 1952 onward) and is considered the last newly introduced sword-type bayonet of any major army – marking the end of the era of long bayonet blades.
Due to its limited export numbers, its direct connection to the early production history of the FN-49, and the scarcity of well-preserved examples, the M 1924/49 is regarded as a highly collectible item in the fields of South American and FN military history.
