Historical Context: Moresca Dancers, Allach & Erasmus Grasser
The Moresca Dancers originate from a famous series of late Gothic wooden sculptures created around 1480 by Erasmus Grasser for Munich’s Old Town Hall. These works are considered masterpieces of German late Gothic art and are today exhibited in the Munich City Museum.
The Allach Porcelain Manufactory adopted this important art-historical subject and translated it into porcelain. Sculptor Richard Förster created independent sculptural interpretations that preserved both the dynamic movement and expressive character of the original wooden figures.
The figure “Moresca Dancer III – Gezaddelte”, also known as “The Tattered Skirt” or “Figure with Tall Cap”, was issued in 1941 as a special commission for the City of Munich. The absence of a model number, the original SS Allach manufactory mark, and the excellent state of preservation make this piece a significant example of Allach porcelain art and a highly sought-after collector’s item within the Moresca series.
