German Army Officer’s Dagger [M1935]
German Army Officer’s Dagger Model 1935 for officers of the German Army, without maker marking on the blade. The dagger has an overall length of approximately 39.8 cm and corresponds to the classic configuration of the Army Officer’s Dagger with yellowish Trolon grip, oak leaf decorated fittings, granulated scabbard and original leather buffer washer.
Grip & Crossguard: Round Trolon grip in yellowish coloration with double-twisted, convex fluting. The fluting curves outward and corresponds to the typical form of the Army Officer’s Dagger Model 1935. The conical pommel is firmly screwed onto the tang and decorated with surrounding oak leaf ornamentation. At the lower end of the grip is the typical grip ring. The crossguard is executed in the form of the Army eagle, facing left, with downward swept wing tips. In its claws, the eagle holds a wreath with swastika.
Blade: Double-edged blade without maker marking. The blade remains uncleaned and therefore shows an authentic, not subsequently polished surface. Between the blade shoulders and the lower crossguard is the original leather buffer washer. The absence of a maker mark identifies the dagger as an unmarked version of the German Army Officer’s Dagger Model 1935.
Scabbard: The scabbard is made from drawn sheet steel and displays the typical granulated surface texture on both front and reverse. Fitted with a separately inserted throat piece, secured from the side by one screw. The scabbard has two oak leaf decorated suspension bands with loose, fully closed suspension rings. The tip of the scabbard is rounded and not dented. The execution corresponds to the classic scabbard form of the German Army Officer’s Dagger Model 1935.
Special Features: Especially noteworthy is the classic combination of yellowish Trolon grip, oak leaf decorated fittings, original leather buffer washer, unmarked blade and granulated scabbard. German Army Officer’s Daggers without maker marking are known within this dagger model, but can still be clearly attributed to the Model 1935 through grip material, fittings, scabbard and construction details. This piece represents a simple, unmarked version of the German Army Officer’s Dagger.
Historical Background: German Army Officer’s Dagger Model 1935
The German Army Officer’s Dagger Model 1935 was introduced as a representative edged weapon for officers of the German Army. It formed part of the dress and parade uniform and was not intended as a combat knife, but as a rank and representation item within the officer’s equipment.
Typical features of this dagger model include the fluted grip, the conical pommel with oak leaf decoration, the crossguard with Army eagle and the granulated scabbard with two oak leaf decorated suspension bands. Depending on maker, production period and material execution, numerous variations exist in grip material, grip color, fittings, blade markings and scabbard surfaces.
Not all German Army Officer’s Daggers carry a maker marking on the blade. Unmarked blades are known within this dagger model and are identified through construction, fittings, grip execution, scabbard and other detail features. Such pieces document the manufacturing variety of the Model 1935.
The present dagger shows the classic design of the German Army Officer’s Dagger with yellowish Trolon grip, Army eagle crossguard, original leather buffer washer and granulated scabbard. It is therefore a typical, unmarked version of this well-known officer dagger model.
