Customs & Import Duties – Who pays and how does it work?
Quick note: For deliveries outside the EU, import VAT, duties and service fees may apply. Unless explicitly stated otherwise, these are payable by the recipient. Clearance is usually handled by the carrier (broker).
Who pays the charges?
▶ Standard (similar to DAP/DDU)
We generally ship on terms where duties and local taxes in the destination country are paid by the recipient. The carrier will contact you for payment (online, message, or upon delivery).
▶ Exceptions
If a duty-paid option (e.g., DDP) is offered, it will be explicitly shown at checkout or on the product page.
How are duties & taxes calculated?
▶ Calculation basics
- Tariff/HS code and legal classification of the item
- Item value (invoice) and, where applicable, shipping costs
- Destination country including thresholds/allowances
The exact amount varies by country and item; the customs authority’s assessment is binding.
▶ Service & brokerage fees
Carriers may charge additional fees for pre-clearance/collection (e.g., disbursement fees). Where applicable, these are in addition to duties/taxes.
Who handles clearance—and how will I know?
▶ Clearance by the carrier
Clearance is usually performed by the carrier (or their broker). You’ll receive notifications with a payment link or instructions. Also monitor your tracking status.
▶ Documents required
Sometimes extra information is requested (e.g., tax/ID number, broker authorization, proof of payment value). Please supply these promptly to avoid delays.
Delays & status
▶ Why is my parcel held by customs?
- Random inspection or high parcel volumes
- Missing/unclear documents (value, description, ID)
- Country-specific import permits required
Most holds are released automatically once the carrier or authority has the required data.
▶ What can I do?
Monitor your tracking, respond to carrier messages, and contact us via the contact page if anything is unclear (include your order number and a brief status note).
Refusals, returns & costs
▶ Duties not paid / delivery refused
If duties are not paid or delivery is refused, the parcel will typically return to sender. After receipt we refund the item value minus actual shipping/return and any clearance costs according to our terms.
▶ Reshipping
Reshipment is possible; new shipping fees apply. Please contact us first.
Declared value & transparency
▶ Declaring the item value
We declare items truthfully using the invoice value. Under-declaration or marking as a “gift” is not possible.
▶ Item description
The customs form includes a factual description. For sensitive/rare pieces we keep wording neutral without providing incorrect information.
