Historical Background: Plebiscite of 10 April 1938

On 12 March 1938, German troops entered Austria. The formal “Anschluss” of Austria to the German Reich was carried out on 13 March 1938. The plebiscite of 10 April 1938 therefore took place only after Austria had already been incorporated.

The plebiscite was accompanied by an extensive National Socialist propaganda campaign. Posters, postcards, newspapers, speeches and public events promoted a “Yes” vote for the annexation that had already taken place. The vote was not conducted according to the principles of a free and democratic election.

Certain groups of the population, including Jews, Roma and political opponents of the Nazi regime, were excluded from voting. Contemporary propaganda material such as this poster was used to promote and display public support for National Socialist policy.

The poster is described exclusively as a historical collector’s object and period document. Its presentation serves the historical and academic classification of National Socialist propaganda.
