Historical Background: Cross of Honour of the German Mother in Silver

The Cross of Honour of the German Mother, commonly known as the “Mother’s Cross”, was instituted on 16 December 1938. The decoration was awarded to mothers with large families and issued in several classes.

The Silver Class was generally awarded to mothers with six to seven children and became one of the better-known civil awards of the period. The cross was worn suspended from its ribbon during official ceremonies and public holidays.
