Historical Background: Iron Cross 1939, 2nd Class

The Iron Cross 1939 was reintroduced on 1 September 1939 by Adolf Hitler at the outbreak of the Second World War and followed the design tradition of earlier award classes. The 2nd Class became one of the most frequently awarded decorations for bravery and military merit within the German armed forces and associated organizations.

The award was generally granted for acts of bravery in combat or outstanding military service. It was worn suspended from its ribbon through the buttonhole of the uniform or as part of a ribbon bar. Numerous manufacturers produced the Iron Cross with slight variations in construction, making maker-marked examples especially attractive to collectors today.

The maker mark “25” is assigned to the Association of Engravers’, Gold- and Silversmiths’ Guilds in Hanau am Main, recognized among the wartime manufacturers of the period.
