Purchase: Hartkopf Richard, Solingen
Richard Hartkopf is a distinguished name among the blank weapon manufacturers of Solingen, Germany’s renowned Blade City in North Rhine-Westphalia. While precise details on the founding year are scarce, historical records suggest Richard Hartkopf was active as a manufacturer in Solingen during the early 20th century, likely from the 1920s, with a focus on high-quality knives and daggers. The company was deeply rooted in Solingen’s tradition of craftsmanship, producing pocket knives, hunting knives, and, during the Nazi era, military daggers that have since become prized collector items. The firm was based at Florastraße 100 in Solingen, specializing in cutlery and steelware production.
During the Third Reich, Richard Hartkopf was known for crafting SA daggers (Sturmabteilung daggers), which were distributed in the Reichsgau Nm (Nordmark). A notable example is the SA Dagger [Early Version] by Richard & E. Hartkopf Solingen, marked with the rare maker’s mark “Rich. & E. Hartkopf Solingen” on the blade. These daggers are estimated to have been produced in limited quantities, approximately 1000 pieces, earning them a rarity rating of 4 on a scale of 1 to 5. The SA daggers typically feature the motto "Alles für Deutschland" engraved on the blade, with nickel-plated handles and detailed emblems, showcasing exceptional craftsmanship. The scabbards often retain much of their original anodized finish, adding to their historical and collectible value.
The logo of Richard Hartkopf often incorporated the distinctive devil heads design, symbolizing the sharp and durable quality of their blades. This logo was frequently etched onto the blades or integrated into the handles, making their products instantly recognizable. After World War II, Richard Hartkopf likely shifted focus to civilian knife production, maintaining Solingen’s reputation for precision and quality in blank weapon manufacturing. It is possible that Erich Hartkopf later founded the “EHASO” (Erich Hartkopf Stahlwarenfabrikation GmbH & Co.) company, which remains active in Solingen today.
