Luftwaffe Dagger [1937] with Knot & Damascus Blade

Luftwaffe Officer’s Dagger Model 1937 in the 2nd Model configuration, with portepee / knot and Damascus blade. The dagger has an overall length of approximately 42.2 cm. The blade is made from genuine Damascus steel and represents a high-grade special execution of the Luftwaffe Officer’s Dagger. The dagger features a light-colored Trolon grip, Luftwaffe eagle crossguard, granulated scabbard, original leather buffer washer and attached portepee.

Grip & Crossguard: Round grip with wooden core and light-colored Trolon covering. The fluting is convex, curving outward, and corresponds to the typical form of the Luftwaffe Officer’s Dagger Model 1937. The pommel is firmly screwed onto the tang and decorated on both sides with national emblems as well as surrounding oak leaf ornamentation. At the lower end of the grip is the typical decorative grip ring with oak leaves arranged side by side. The crossguard is executed in the form of the Luftwaffe eagle, facing left, with downward swept wing tips. In its claws, the eagle holds a swastika.

Blade: Double-edged, very clean Damascus blade made from genuine Damascus steel. The Damascus structure is visible across the blade surface and gives the dagger a clearly higher-grade, decorative appearance compared with regular versions with plain standard blades. Between the blade shoulders and the lower crossguard is the original leather buffer washer. The Damascus blade forms the special focal point of this Luftwaffe Officer’s Dagger Model 1937.

Scabbard: The scabbard is made from drawn sheet steel and displays the typical granulated surface texture on both front and reverse. Fitted with a separately inserted throat piece, secured from the sides by two small screws. The scabbard has two oak leaf decorated suspension bands with loose, fully closed suspension rings. The tip of the scabbard is rounded and undamaged. The execution corresponds to the classic scabbard form of the Luftwaffe Officer’s Dagger Model 1937.

Portepee / Knot: The dagger comes with an attached Luftwaffe portepee / knot. The portepee complements the representative appearance of the dagger and belongs to the typical wearing accessories of a Luftwaffe Officer’s Dagger. Together with the Damascus blade, it creates a particularly decorative ensemble within Luftwaffe edged weapons.

Special Features: Especially noteworthy is the combination of genuine Damascus blade, light-colored Trolon grip, original leather buffer washer, granulated scabbard and attached portepee. Luftwaffe Officer’s Daggers with Damascus blades are considerably rarer than regular standard versions and belong to the higher-grade special variants of the Model 1937. This piece combines the classic form of the Luftwaffe Officer’s Dagger with a particularly decorative blade execution.

Historical Background: Luftwaffe Officer’s Dagger Model 1937 with Damascus Blade

The Luftwaffe Officer’s Dagger Model 1937 was introduced as the second dagger pattern of the German Luftwaffe and replaced the earlier Luftwaffe Aircrew Dagger Model 1935 as the standard officer’s edged weapon. It was worn with the dress and parade uniform and served as a representative equipment item for Luftwaffe officers.

Characteristic features of the Model 1937 include the round fluted grip, the spherical pommel with national emblems, the crossguard in the form of the Luftwaffe eagle and the granulated scabbard with two suspension rings. Depending on maker, production period and materials used, different detail variations occur in grips, fittings, scabbards, blades and wearing accessories.

Damascus blades represent a particularly elaborate special execution on Luftwaffe Officer’s Daggers. Through the structured steel surface and the decorative effect of the Damascus pattern, such blades stand out clearly from regular standard blades. They emphasize the representative character of the dagger and are an important feature for collectors.

The portepee / knot belonged to the representative wearing configuration of the Luftwaffe Officer’s Dagger and completed the uniform equipment. Together with a Damascus blade, classic scabbard and preserved fittings, this results in a high-grade special execution of the Luftwaffe Officer’s Dagger Model 1937.
