SS Dagger [Early Version] from SS-Obersturmführer Julius Weck - Gottlieb Hammesfahr Solingen-Foche

This outstanding original SS Dagger comes directly from the family of the Division veteran “Julius Weck” that brought it home. This SS Dagger is a textbook Hammesfahr example. The cross guards are the "J.W.", marked. These guards are smooth-surfaced nickel, still having nice crisp edges and good hand-cut accent grooves. There is Roman numeral stamping on the lower reverse guard "III". The reverse lower crossguard is stamped with initials of the owner J. W. Julius Weck. Julius Weck was one of the first person, who received the golden Close Combat Clasp personally by Adolf Hitler on 27 August, 1944, you can read more about this on german Wikipedia "Nahkampfspange" or under Downloads here. The grip is a very fine ebony example, which has some very attractive graining which sows around the center on both sides. The obverse grip is totally perfect, whereas the reverse has just a small amount of wood material which has flaked off at the upper right area. This grip is a “Medium to High Ridge Contour” variety; it fits the crossguards like a glove. The SS Runes Button is turned slightly, to about 6:30 o'clock. The runes have toned to match the runes and the double circles around them have tones to match the crossguards. The enamel on this button remains perfect. The grip eagle is a nickel example. It is the “Beak Which Points Upward” style bird. This bird has good detail to evident his eye, wing and breast feathering, talons, wreath and mobile swastika. A nice hilt here! The scabbard shell is straight throughout. It has been period black painted. This paint shows much age and wear, and maybe rates at about 70% - I guess a new paint job would really help this scabbard, but I'll leave that to the next owner of this dagger. The matching patinated nickel scabbard mounts are in excellent condition, to include the lower ball. The original nickel screws are all in place and are unturned. The original-to-the-piece vertical hanger shows some age. The cross strap is equipped with a heavier-than-normal nickel-plated buckle. The snap clip is the plated type. The blade of this example is still nice and bright, and it retains nearly all of its original crossgraining with good needle tip. This blade has some in-and-out wear, but easily grades in near full mint condition. The blade is crisp etched and deep. The SS motto has nearly all of the original factory darkening in the backgrounds. A very fine blade here! The reverse ricasso is matching etched with double ovals. These ovals trap the firm’s name and location, “Gottlieb Hammesfahr, Solingen – Foche”. Inside is the pyramid with the “plus” sign on the front surface. The blade shoulders perfectly meet the lower crossguard contours. Untouched and should go very nicely into a serious SS collection.
