Purchase: Imperial Fire Official’s Dirk M1870 by Carl Eickhorn Solingen

Eickhorn Carl, Solingen

This Imperial Fire Official’s Dirk 1870 is in EXC++ condition. The total length is 48.2 cm. Blade with Maker C. E. (Carl Eickhorn Solingen).

Grip: The grip of the dirk appears to be made of wood with leather. It is a dark blue color, and carved to have twelve ribs. The ribs are all wrapped with twisted silver wire. This wire is just slightly larger than the rib cavities, as over the years the horn has naturally shrunk somewhat.

Blade: The blade of this fine dirk is 34,6 cm long. It is a beauty, still having all of the nickel plating throughout as well as a needle tip. The blade is just about mint. It has a center ridge with double edges. The obverse area depicts floral designs and, in the center, has a panel which has a ladder and next to the ladder are two fire poles and lower down the way is a Fireman's helmet with ax. A great fire scene here. On the reverse there are floral designs and, in the center, is an as. The ricasso is stamped with the  firm's initials “C. E.” carl Eickhorn Solingen. The original leather blade buffer is in positioned, showing a little wear around the edges but still all there.

Scabbard: The scabbard consists of a thin black leather shell which is trimmed with twin line enhancement on the edges of both sides. It is sewn up the rear in the standard fashion. The mounts are constructed of matching nickel. The upper mount is quite large, as it has both of the upper and lower hanging rings, bands and eyelets built into it. There is no carrying band per se, but it is simulated by twin lined enhancements. In the center of the enhancements on the right side is a round eyelet and carrying ring.
