Land Customs Official's Dagger [1937] - Clemen & Jung, Solingen

This Land Customs Official's Dagger shows some age and some usage throughout but it is still in collectible condition. Model 1937. The total length is 41.4 cm. The Dagger has the maker mark on the blade: Clemen & Jung, Solingen.

Grip: The dagger has hilt mounts produced of molded aluminum. The pommel has a good smooth upper top portion and the rim has only a couple of minor hits around it. Surrounding the pommel is the standing land customs oak leaves which are the style with points on the top. These oak leaves show quite a bit of hand enhancing throughout their structure. The ferrule is the same basic design having the pointed oak leaves which overlap each other running around the circumference. The crossguard is completely smooth on the reverse and on the obverse features the land customs eagle having outstretched wings which are tipped on the ends. This bird has nice detail to his eye, beak, breast feathering, talons, wing feathers, wreath and mobile swastika. All good hilt mounts here! The grip is a carved wood base having a leather covered surface. The green leather has toned color to a slight brownish green look. The grip leather however is still in excellent condition with no scuffs or nips. This leather is kept tight with original dual twisted brass grip wire.

Blade: The blade of this example is a typical Clemen & Jung. These Clemen & Jung blades were finished with almost a matte look. This example shows some minor brightness but there is also quite a bit of smudge which is evenly spread across the surfaces. The blade retains its original needlelike tip. The blade is stamped on the obverse ricasso with its factory name and location, Clemen & Jung and on the reverse has the shield symbol with the crown over the top and a letter “Z” in the center. There is a small style brown leather washer in place.

Scabbard: The scabbard shell is straight throughout. This shell of course is a steel base and it is covered with land customs green leather. The leather at the upper portion between the upper and center mount is still in excellent condition. The leather between the center mount and the lower mount however has cracked and is also split where the seam goes together. The splitting of the leather is not too bad showing on both sides but I think it is in a condition that is better to be lived with than replaced as there is very little leather actually missing. The leather still shows its grain and is a slightly more green color than the grip. The scabbard mounts are the steel type having a nickel-like coating. The coating is still nearly intact having only a little slight wear along the reverse center portion. These mounts have eyelets which are soldered into place with the usual carrying rings. These mounts have decorative lines which are engraved along the borders on the obverse only. The mounts are retained by a flush mount headless screw on the left side of each.
